Neumarkt is a lively city with numerous sport and leisure activities available. The fully restored Ludwig Canal, which is more than 160 years old, is one of the main landmarks of Neumarkt and the administrative district. It floats ahead in a straight line and you have a uniquely beautiful view from its embankment onto the gardens and lawns of Neumarkt. Explore the area on horseback or by foot on one of of many long hiking trails. You can go on a bike tour deep into the lush Oberpfalz Jura.
CALM RIVER VALLEYS
Neumarkt is located at the border of the Oberpfalz Jura, which is marked by 5 iconic mountains. Going on day trips and exploring the area gives hikers the opportunity to enjoy the enticing interplay of soft hilltops, serene streams and rough chalk cliffs. Follow along romantic pastures and the Lengenbach stream, the Lauterach, the Sulz and the Laaber.
WATER PARK
The outdoor water park offers a wild stream as well as water massages and an exciting slide. The swimming pool, the adventure pool and the children’s area offer lots of opportunity to swim and have fun between May and September. If you go play tennis or squash in Neumarkt, you will can cool down and relax at the outdoor swimming center. In October 2019, the first part of the new swimming center that will be open throughout the year, the Neumarkter Schlossbad, will be finished.
GARDEN EXHIBITION “LANDESGARTENSCHAU”
The premises of 1998’s Landesgartenschau in Neumarkt is still in an excellent condition. In addition to the exhibition and communication center in the tower of the former sewage plant, a neighborhood meeting place has been established on the grounds of the round basin. All around there are lovely water gardens and the wonderful park with its creative fragrant herbal gardens.
MARKETS & CELEBRATIONS
Celebrate with us in the historic city center on the Marktstraße (market street) and marvel at the beautifully decorated wagons of the traditional local clubs that join the Jura Volksfest (the popular local fair). The Neumarkter Rossmarkt (horse market) is famous beyond the borders of the Upper Palatinate and attracts many people every year.
FESTIVAL IN THE OLD CITY CENTER
The festival in the old city center of Neumarkt is an excellent chance to experience the traditions of the Upper Palatinate. Visitors can have a good time with music, dancing, food and delicious beer. Special shows, an area for children and the popular Medieval market provide fun and entertainment for the entire family.
Jura-THE JURA FAIR
The Jura Volksfest (Jura Fair) in Neumarkt first took place in 1829. It has become one of the most famous large events of Neumarkt – a real highlight. Eleven days of exciting rides, sweet treats and festive mood draw people to the Jurahallen (event halls) and to Neumarkt’s festival ground.
The Neumarkter Roßmarkt
The Rossmarkt (horse market) is a traditional event that dates back centuries. It has always been and still is a huge attraction. The proud horses, some of which are pulling lovely carriages, are led through the historic city and past its Medieval buildings. Lots of people watch and marvel at the wonderful show.
SPORTS & LEISURE
From calm to active – Neumarkt is a historic city in the heart of Bavaria that offers everything you could wish for when it comes to leisure activities. Fishing, horseback riding, swimming, tennis, squash, cross-country skiing, bike tours – there are virtually no limitations to having a fun and active time. Neumarkt i. d. Oberpfalz and the region are part of the Bavarian Jura, a versatile and popular leisure region.
Golf
The lush green meadows of the Oberpfalz Jura offer the ideal setting for idyllic golf courses. Anyone who really wants to enjoy the area and appreciates a golf course that is kept as natural as possible, will likely enjoy the Golf-Club Herrnhof and the Jura Golf Park west of Neumarkt.
BIKE TOURS
The bike trails around Neumarkt offer numerous unique natural sights of the Oberpfalz Jura for you to discover. A tour to the source of the black Laber, the low mountain ranges or along the old Ludiwg Canal – the area is attractive for biking enthusiasts of all ages.
HIKING
The Jura-Linie from Velburg to Regensburg is the most attractive of the 4 hiking trails between the river Main and the Danube when it comes to the landscape. The Camino de Santiago between Prague and Rothenburg also leads past us. The Falkenweg offers beautiful view along the Albtrauf.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Cross-country skiing is very famous in the administrative district of Neumarkt. There are 6 excellent routs available in winter. You can choose which one of these great routs best suits your style – nordic or classic. Thanks to our altitude of 400 to 600 meters, there is usually fresh snow.
